Bed Bugs 101: Conquering Bed Bugs in College Dorms
Back to school means a lot of things to new and returning college students: independent living, homework, friends and so much more. What you probably don’t think of is bed bugs — but unfortunately, there’s a real risk of these pesky insects in your dorm room. Watch for signs of bed bugs in your room and act fast if you suspect an infestation.
Cleanliness Isn’t Enough
Contact Waldorf emergency pest control at the start of every semester to do an inspection of your dorm room. Better yet, if you’re a member of the college staff, schedule an inspection for every dorm room on campus. Doing a quick cleaning of each room isn’t enough. Bed bugs nest in dark crevices of rooms, so you’re unlikely to notice them with the naked eye.
What Carries the Bugs
If your bed is clean, are you in the clear? The insects are called bedbugs, but they’re not only attracted to beds. They latch on to other fabrics such as the clothing in your closet, drapes, furniture, luggage, or on the clothing of people who’ve been exposed to them. Even if the previous residents cleared out all of their belongings, the bed bugs will stay behind to infest your things.
How to Exterminate Them Once and for All
A professional exterminator is your best bet for destroying the bed bug infestation once and for all, especially before students move in. Keep your dorm room clean and avoid leaving food out. Act fast and call an exterminator if you notice reddish stains on your mattress or fabrics, as this could indicate bed bugs.
Bringing your own mattress and bedding only delays the problem — it doesn’t solve it. If there’s an infestation in the room before you get there, the bugs will eventually make their way into your bed, so ask a professional exterminator to do an inspection today.
